My summer vacation started only last week, and I wasn't able to enjoy and join the summer fun of most people who could afford (with both time and money) to travel. Yet even if I am quite late in my summer endeavors, I still want to feel the summer fun and wish to publish the updated boat rates in Pundakit (which was posted as a comment somewhere in my other blog a couple of months ago).

Here's a copy of that post, detailing the boat rates as provided by a baranggay ordinance. Violators may be fined or even have their permits cancelled.

house blend (noticed it too late), so I just sipped brewed tea while my dad

I first got acquainted with A Veneto, Glorietta back in 2005 (or early 2006), and loved it for being a real value for money especially for groups. A few years later, I introduced the resto to a pasta-lover friend, and since then she and another friend became regular customers of the place. But for about a couple of years already, I haven't been back in A Veneto.

On May 17, 2010, for a supposedly surprise dinner for a friend, I got re-acquainted with A Veneto, now to the third branch I would try out (the second being the Visayas Ave. branch) - Trinoma Mall. Not much difference, except for a less flashy set of wall paintings versus the nice mural in Glorietta.

I'll be back in A Veneto, especially for a group treat that gets everyone so full and the pocket still breathing. *burp*

Ponds and Pines View Resort

Ponds and Pines took my breath away. That is an exaggeration, but I really did love the place the moment I saw it.

Located in Nagbunga, Castillejos or San Marcelino (I don't even know, but it is located at the border), Zambales, somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

Aside from the pool, what I actually loved about the place is the spacious landscaped lawn. It is a great place for events, plus parking won't be a nightmare. ;)

Cris Aura Swimming Pool

Hidden somewhere in Magsaysay, Castillejos, Zambales. I think they charge P50 per person. They close at 6:00 PM, but it was indicated in their rules and regulations that they'll charge you extra for staying beyond that time. I guess it has to be arranged in advance.

Cris Aura offers separate pools for kids and adults. However, the slide is located at the adult pool, and using it plunges you to some 6 feet of water, so better get the life jacket ready if you can't swim but wish to enjoy the ride.

Pundaquit

Jump off point for going to Anawangin Cove, Capones and Camara Islands (seen in this photo), Nagsasa Cove, and all other coves in San Antonio (and probably Subic, too).

Pundaquit's beach contrasts that of Anawanin such that the former sometimes give you a rough swim by the shore, while Anawangin is seemingly peaceful (but beware for some underwater currents as you'll never know what the water can bring you).

In Anawangin, you will be charged P50 for day trip, which includes use of the papag and bathroom, while in Pundaquit, you will be charged (if at all, that is for short day trips) depending on who you are, who you know, and where you go (e.g., definitely not the "touristy" resorts).

Canoe Beach Resort

Canoe Beach Resort --- the first "real" resort I've been to in Pundakit, San Antonio, Zambales. That was last April 30 to May 1. It also marked the first time that I swam in a swimming pool in Pundaquit.

Except for the grumpy lady who you have to deal with for reservation, checking in and payment, the resort offers good amenities at very reasonable prices. Just don't get the non-aircon rooms (particularly the beachfront ones, for I have not tried the poolside rooms) as they are overpriced for their real value.

Compare a P2,200 aircon room with a P1,500 non-aircon - P700 premium for a sweet slumber in a cool room with a bathroom versus a fan only room in a hot summer night where you share a bathroom with the rest of the resort customers (who are not checked in the aircon rooms). That's P700, which four of you can share.

Overnight room rates include the use of the pool, barbeque grills, and other stuff I have no care for. However, according to their brochure, the use of electricity for additional appliances (i.e. those you brought with you, which are not the property of the resort) should be reported and paid accordingly. Indeed, in our room, there exists only one outlet used for the electric fan placed high up in the wall. Though I bet you can easily do something about it.

The verdict: highly recommended (again, try to keep your cool when dealing with that grumpy lady...). Oh, because of that grumpy lady, I downgrade my verdict to slightly highly recommendable resort. ;)

For day trips, entrance fee is P60 per person, another P60 for overnight rates (staying beyond 6:00 PM), additional P85 for the use of the pool, while cottages' rental rates range from P500 to P1,500. Additional P800 to P2,000 for overnight stay.

A beautiful place to bond, especially with my MA friends. A perfect getaway
to unwind and relax after a year of learning and struggle in graduate
school.

Quiet place (on a weekday), nice amenities (even as it remains to be further
developed), soft breeze under the shade of trees, and a vast blue sea to
highlight the trip.

Though, not a great place to swim despite its beautiful and clean water (but
clearly a compatible beach for kids who love to swim). ;)

Caution: Get your medicines ready.

I was there last Dec. 11 and 17 for a dinner with college friends and graduate school classmates, respectively. Enjoyed the food, the place was nice and cozy for a big group, but not really budget friendly for a student without a job. If the Dec. 11 wasn't JD's treat, I would have spent some P260.00. The second dinner robbed me P200 (on a service water diet), but gave me a different kind of high.

I shared the aligue rice (supposedly good for 2 to 3 people) with Mon and Kevin, and we all got high. Thanks to Pinay who helped us finish the sinful heap of rice. Vodka 7 was nothing compared to feasting on rice sauteed in high cholesterol aligue plus other sumptuos meals. Aack! Aligue rice was most delicious on first serving.

Some classmates tried their Sinangag sa Sinigang Rice, and being sinigang, it was maasim. I like to pour tons ofsabaw ng sinigang over my rice, but that rice was weird.

As for the meals, I loved their Calderetang Nuevo (really tasty tender beef) and Crispy Tadyang. Their tinolang manok, nilaga and pinakbet were not so special, at least for me.

By the way, Karen said the P20 green mango shake was better than Kanin Club's super expensive (some P120) version.

Back to the Basics

From personal blog, to pseudo-travel blog, to pseudo-personal-photo blog, and back to pseudo-travel blog. For a difference though, I'd call this a quasi-personal-travel blog*.

Fickle-minded me, I have decided (not really with finality, who can tell what I'd be thinking tomorrow!) to focus this blog to sights, sceneries and celebrations around me that are much more related to travel, trips and adventures. Of course, wonderful people will (hopefully) still be in my site.

However, for the moment, I doubt if I'd be able to update this blog. Too busy with graduate school (check my other blog for the more personal stuff :) ). Maybe photos in UP will do.

I hope to enjoy the outdoors (or whatever trip) soon!

*The shift from "pseudo" to "quasi" is simply an influence from my math class, regarding convexity and concavity, even if I do not really know the difference between the two, or what they really mean.

And just to keep up with my desire to put a photo in every post, that's my desktop background for now. ;)

The bookshelf that sealed the deal

It has been two weeks and two days already since we moved to our new place in Quezon City. It's expensive for the three of us (roommates), but the place simply captivated us. And that's the bookshelf up the staircase that sealed the deal.

But, being busy with school, we haven't filled it up yet. Soon. I'm excited about it, but I get tired thinking about moving all my books up that shelf.

This was taken some weeks ago. I had to buy some expensive coffee to be able to get myself in the mood to work. Expensive, not worth it sometimes.

But this day, I wish I could have just bought myself an expensive coffee or tea and a pastry and not work, be unproductive and just spend for some overpriced treat, rather than spend money trying to get my car fixed, getting stressed out for not being able to bring that car to a good repair shop (coding, EDSA, overheat, wrecker).

Now, why not a wrecker instead? (And why the "Seattle's Best" title???)

A month after my flight back here. Ang bilis. Sometimes days would pass by so quickly. But when waiting for something or someone, it seems slow.

The dense cluster of houses and buildings in this shot reminds me of my need to find a place to stay in Quezon City, near UP and accessible by public transportation to EDSA, too. I should really look for one now.

Vietnamese so love parsley. Here's a spaghetti with parsley served in one of the coffee shops in Ninh Kieu, Can Tho.

Most often, they put parsley not as a decor but as an actual ingredient in the food they serve. Along with ice, tea with ice (and no sugar), rotonda, toothpick, ice cream, motorcycles, leaves or grass (vegetables, the green leafy ones) and coffee, they love parsley.

I was thinking of buying a Nikon D40, then remembered Chris Linag since that is his baby, then remembered how good he takes photos, then remembered I borrowed some of his pics to post here to tell the story about the first Eraserheads reunion concert when my boyfriend called me while I was in Guimaras to let me hear them song "With a Smile."

Then I realize how good that song is, then searched for its lyrics in the internet to post it here with a cute photo of my little sister and my little cousin smiling so innocently, and let me and let you remember how good life is, and that no matter how bad things appear to be, we can always smile at it and pray and everything's going to be okay.

Cenaculo 2009

The reenactment of the Passion of Christ

I was amazed to find out that there were three cenaculo's in Castillejos this Holy Week. I didn't follow them or see what they were doing, though, except for viewing the live kubol's around the town. I just waited as they passed by our place.

The cenaculo enacted by the Union of Concerned Youth of Castillejos, Incorporated (UCYC, Inc.) was the best, I believe. I could feel the holiness of Holy Week and the suffering of Jesus Christ in their faces and actions. A must-see for me next year. (Photos of UCYC below.)

As mentioned earlier, there were live kubol's around the town. I didn't get to see all of them. Another must-see for me next year. And hopefully, I'll be able to capture them in photos by then and share them with the world.

Ito nga, may parte ng tsinelas. May rubber shoes pa! (Nakakadiri na nga lang lapitan. Haha.)

Nakipagkwentuhan ako sa taga-doon. Ang local government dapat ang nag-aasikaso sa lugar na ito. Kaso, tamad daw ang mga opisyal. Tinanong ko kung sino. Mga kagawad ng baranggay. Kaya wala raw naglilinis o nagbabantay o nag-aalaga dito. Hindi tulad sa Anawangin (one point for capitalism.)

Dati raw, ang Coast Guard ang nag-aalaga dito. Kaso, ang mga kababayan niya, pinaalis ang Coast Guard. Bakit? Dahil nanghuhuli sila ng mga gumagamit ng dinamita. Hindi ko na natanong kung kailan, hindi ko na tinanong kung patuloy pa rin iyong nangyayari ngayon. Ang siniguro ko lang, lambat ang ginagamit niya sa pangingisda.

Sa ngayon, mga turista, mountaineers, hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, environmentalists, o kung anumang gusto mong itawag sa mga bumibisita doon ang minsan naglilinis sa lugar.

Sana maaagapan ito. Sayang naman kung mapabayaan, maganda pa naman ang Capones.

Yet again, it is still beautiful. The water's so clear, so enticing to jump into. The place is still relaxing, the wind and the birds bringing music to my ears.

On the way to Mt. Pulag. A lot of "stopovers" along the way due to the high number of hikers going to the mountain (via Ambangeg trail), hence more jeepneys trying to rough up the rocky terrain, sometimes stalling others.

How to Get to Zambales (Anawangin) via SCTEX

As Anawangin is now so famous, and a friend of a friend has just asked me how to get there, and now that SCTEX is already open to the public, I am now going to update my guide on going to Zambales (via private transportation.)

Here's my revision based on my entry last year. Starting point: EDSA (Balintawak)

Diretso lang hanggang sa daang papunta ng North Luzon Expressway. Ito ay medyo paliko ng kanan, bago ang "tulay" papuntang Monumento, at may "digital" na "signboard" na kulay orange ang ilaw ng mga tuldok.
Mag-ingat sa daan. Ang sabi ng NLEX, 100 kph ang maximum speed. Madaling araw kayo pupunta, kaya di ko alam baka walang nanghuhuli. Ang unang toll gate na makikita niyo ay ang Balintawak Toll Plaza (kunwari na lang tama ngang yun ang official name niya). Dito ay nagbabayad ng fixed open system fee na P36.00. May linya para sa exact toll, may linya na eksklusibong para sa mga may EC (hindi ito exact change, sandali, meron nito si Princess e... hindi ko talaga maalala ang ibig sabihin ng EC, siguro electronic card).
Ang mga gasoline station na madadaanan niyo sa NLEX ay ang (1) Petron, (2) Shell, (3) Total, at (4) Petron Lakeshore. May free wi-fi sa Petron Lakeshore - tried and tested na gumagana. Sa Total meron din daw, kaso walang kwenta, hindi ako nakapag-Internet doon.
Lalampasan ninyo ang San Fernando exit. Dati dito ang exit pa-Zambales, pero doon na tayo ngayon lampas ng Dau.
Mag-exit sa katamtamang laki na Dau Toll Plaza. Dito ang bayad kung galing sa Balintawak ay P138.00.
Lampasan ang Dau exit, pero malapit na dito ang SCTEX Clark Logistics (Interchange.) Bagalan na ang takbo.
Pagkapasok sa Clark Logistics interchange, dumiretso (pero paliko ang daan) sa toll gate. Dito bibigyan kayo ng card. Ibig sabihin, officially nasa SCTEX na kayo.
Pagkapasok sa SCTEX, diretso lang ang daan. Malapit sa toll gate ay may dalawang daan: yung diretso ay pa-Subic, yung pakanan ay pa-Tarlac, Baguio at iba pa sa bandang hilaga doon. I-enjoy ang daan sa pa-Subic (ang dire-diretso lang) dahil pa-bilog ang daan dito. May sign naman, magbasa na lang kayo.
Diretso. Diretso. Muli 100kph ang speed limit. Bahala ka na kung gusto mong bumilis. Madaming insekto sa daan lalo na kung gabi o madaling araw. Huwag kang malungkot kung madumihan ang windshield mo. Isipin mo, pag tumagal pa, uunti na lang yan dahil sa dami ng sasakyang pumapatay sa kanila. Kawawa rin naman sila.
Sa dulo ng SCTEX ay ang Subic exit. Animnapung (60) kilometro ang tinakbo mo kaya P112.00 ang bayad dahil P2/km ang halaga ng pagdaan sa SCTEX.
Pagkalabas mo ng SCTEX, papasok ka agad sa Tipo road, SBMA na. May toll gate din dito. P18.00 ang bayad sa Class 1 vehicles.
Ang susunod na gate ay sa mga pulis. Slow down lang.
Sumunod sa batas trapiko sa loob ng SBMA. Sa bawat intersection na may blinking red stoplight, huminto -- first stop, first to go. Sa yellow blinking stoplight, slow down. Huminto rin sa bawat intersection na may "STOP" sign. Pero huwag naman overkill, dahil may mga maliliit na intersection naman na "you have the right of way" at hindi kailangang huminto.
Sa loob ng SBMA after ng pulis gate, zigzag pa rin ang daan. May tunnel kayong madaanan, at kung gusto niyong sumunod sa nakaugalian, bumusina sa lugar na ito. Zigzag, tulay, zigzag hanggang sa may medyo pakaliwang daan na may maikling tulay. Medyo lumalapit na yung liwanag sa lugar na ito (kung madilim pa, mapapansin niyo ang mga ilaw na papalapit).
Malapit sa maikling tulay, may daang diretso at may daang pakanan. Sa pagitan nito, may signboard na bilog na kulay asul na may dalawang arrows na tumuturo sa magkabilang daan. Lumiko sa kanan.
Pagkakanan, diretso lang. Sa kaliwa ay may Petron at may stoplight dito. Pwede kayong mag-stopover muli sa Petron. May Nike store at Factory Outlet dito ng mga branded sports wear. Pero kung alanganing oras kayo napadaan, baka sarado na iyon.
Kunwaring hindi kayo dumaan sa Petron, diretsuhin lang ang daan. Intersection ang lugar na ito, sumunod sa batas trapiko.
Pagkalampas sa unang intersection at stoplight, diretso lang at may maikling tulay na naman. Diretso pa rin hanggang sa ikalawang intersection na may stoplight at walang pakanan. Makikita niyo naman ang stoplight, kaya medyo kumaliwa na kayo dahil liliko kayo sa kaliwa sa intersection na ito.
Pagkaliko sa kanan, makikita niyo ang Remy Field sa inyong kanan. Sa kanto mismo ng Remy Field, sa unang maliit na kanto, ang Canal Road, liliko na naman kayo sa kanan.
Maraming mini-intersections dito. Hindi niyo na kailangang huminto sa bawat intersection -- wala kayong makikitang STOP sign, maliban sa isa. Hindi maliwanag ang "Stop" sign sa isang intersection na iyon, pero makikita niyo ang isang makabagong building sa kaliwa (walang recall ang pangalan) at sa pagtawid ay may isa na namang makabagong building sa kanan. Muli, first to stop, first to go. Kahit walang kasalubong na sasakyan, kailangan pa ring huminto.
Makikita niyo sa dulo ng daan ang gate. Huminto at hintayin ang senyas ng guard para lumapit kayo sa gate.
Maaari kayong magtanong sa mga pulis sa loob ng SBMA kung kayo ay maligaw. At kung kayo ay mahuli, may nagbigay ng "pangaral" sa akin na dapat ay maging magalang, "Sir, magandang umaga/hapon/araw po!".
Paglabas ng SBMA (sa tinuro kong daan, lalabas kayo sa Kalaklan Gate), kumaliwa. Zigzag ang lugar na ito. Maganda ang zigzag sa Olongapo, hindi nakakahilo. Diretsong liko-liko lang. Sa inyong kaliwa ay dagat, sa kanan ay bundok, may sementeryo rin.
National road naman ang dadaanan ninyo kaya walang nakalilitong daan. Kasama sa inyong madadaanan ay ang Calapandayan (screen name - dulo). Ito ang lugar na maraming bar at kumukutitap na ilaw. Ang Calapandayan ay nasa bayan na ng Subic. (Isang dagdag kaalaman sa mga hindi masyadong pamilyar sa Zambales: ang Subic ay isang bayan sa Zambales. Ito ang "southernmost town" of the province. Pero further south ang Olongapo City, kung saan narito ang SBMA o Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority. Ang "Subic" na popular tourist destination ay nasa loob ng Olongapo City, pero ang "Subic" na bayan ay katabi lamang ng Olongapo City. Magaganda ang beach sa parehong Subic, pati na rin sa Olongapo -- promote local tourism, sabi ko nga.)
Ang palatandaan na kayo'y papasok na ng Castillejos at palabas ng Subic ay ang arko ng aming bayan (ako po'y taga-Castillejos.) Ang boundary ng dalawang bayan ay ang Pamatawan River, kaya malamang, may tulay dito.
Matapos ang Castillejos ay ang bayan ng San Marcelino. Sa bayan ng San Marcelino, may palikong daan. Pakaliwa ay ang pa-San Antonio (kung nasaan ang Anawangin), at diretso naman ang short cut pa-San Narciso. Ang pakaliwang daan ay ang national road. May signs uli, magbasa na lang.
Sa bayan ng San Antonio (dito nahihirapan na akong magpaliwanag), may "sharp curve" pakanan pagkalampas ng munisipyo. Kumaliwa dito. Basta ganito yun: ang national road ay kumakanan; may maliit na street pa-kaliwa; may school kayong mababangga kung dumiretso kayo, T.R. Yangco yata yun, basta parang ganun.
Sa pagkakaalala ko, pangalawang street yung lilikuan niyo pa-kanan. Tapos makakakita na kayo ng sign pakaliwa papuntang Pundaquit. Ang iba pang pwede niyong basahing sign ay ang "going to Megan's Resort; going to Canoe Beach Resort; at going to iba pang resort."
Somewhere along the road, may one way na tulay. Bigayan lang po dito.
Tapos sundan lang ang daan. Makakarating ka rin sa Pundaquit, ang fishing village sa San Antonio. Dumiretso na sa contact niyong banca*.
Ang boat ride pa-Capones ay approximately 30 minutes. Ang boat ride to Anawangin from Capones ay around 30 minutes din. Anawangin-Pundaquit ay around 30-45 minutes (hindi ko na na-orasan ito e.)

After going out with my friend to spend an afternoon (and night) in Olongapo, and as I drove out of the parking area, I saw the huge full moon, captivating me. So instead of going straight home, off we went to Boardwalk, where everyone gets to enjoy the breeze of the sea for free (plus some free music from nearby bars like Pier 1).

My friend was trying to take a picture of me with that moon in the background when these kids came running toward us. I told them to join me in the picture, but my friend couldn't get a successful shot. Instead, I became the photographer and got them to pose for me.

Atan joined us a moment later. From left: Toto, Joshua, and Atan. The kids from Barretto. Joshua, seven years old, was the most talkative one. Sabi niya ang seksi ko raw (hahaha! he's the only kid, or probably the only person, to have said that recently.)

The last time I remember going to Boardwalk in SBMA was way back in college. Then I visited that beach yesterday, with Mon.

After doing a little grocery in Royal, I wanted to go to a beach just to enjoy the breeze and enjoy the vacation. Where to? Uh, not Ocean View, where we'd get charged PhP120.00 each. Oh, Boardwalk (uhm, is that still its official name?) where everyone gets to enjoy the sea for free. With a few people in jet skis and banana boat (of course that's for a fee, or is it bring your own thing?) I don't recommend the beach for swimming, though. Just my own kaartehan.

It's almost that time of the year again...

...when another year starts....

It doesn't feel like a far-fetched event -- this picture just feels like the other day. Just about a month to go and it's another year. Twenty-seven days to go and it's Christmas.

Where have all the days gone? Why have time seem to pass by so fast? What have happened, what have I done, where have I been, where am I going?

A new year (and make that Christmas, too) offers us an idea of new hope, new life, new beginning. It makes us want to start anew, write new resolutions, create new goals, and refresh our lives. It gives us some energy to re-live our lives again, even if we can do that anytime throughout the year, anyway.

However, the daily struggles in life typically prevent us from living a "new" life each day. Plans remain plans, even if they were set months before a target "new life," and even though they were set to coincide with literally the new year we all celebrate.

Case number 1: My Roommate -- She does not deserve her job

What I mean is, she may love what she is doing, totally capable of delivering outputs, respected by her boss because of her work, but she's not receiving a good pay and her brain's suffering in a way.

I know that she's smart. She has the heart and passion to do something good for this country - either through research or teaching or even social work. But, sad to say, stuck in a semi-corporate job with enough earnings to feed herself daily (and some going to her family.)

In a decisive act, she declared months ago that by the start of the new year - 2009 - she would already have resigned from her current work and working in another company, in a job she would make her career.

Yet, it's already December in a couple of days but she hasn't started looking for that new job yet.

Case number 2: Yours Truly -- The ever confused girl

When I accepted this job last June, I said to myself, "At least I have a job until December, with good pay." Previously, my contract with another institution would have lasted only until September. Still project-based, I was not afraid to go jobless.

With works to extend the project through other funding institutions, I was faced with the question, "If we get funding right away, should I stay, or should I leave?" That was and is not an easy question for me.

See, I am not afraid to lose a job. I am actually "thrilled" to experience a rather challenging day-to-day existence for I have lived comfortably for my entire life. But it is not practical, especially given the "financial crisis" besetting the world, which I can't feel by the way.

I also am not enjoying my work that much. My boss knows that I want to teach, and wonders why I am not doing anything to do just that!

Weeks or months ago, I said to myself that I'd take masters next year, then live with a "come-what-may" attitude for the first half of year. Then for the first half of the year, I can either teach or volunteer. Yet, I am not even sure how I will finance my graduate study since I am just hoping and wishing that I'd get a scholarship.

Yet again, it's already December in a couple of days and I haven't submitted applications or letters of intent to work as an instructor or volunteer. Though I have started searching.

Plans, plans, plans. The daily grind distracts me from doing what I have planned. Anyone can be distracted. It takes great courage to overcome those distractions - or fear. Since those plans typically involves change, it is difficult to execute them. Change, as they say, is the only constant thing in this world (or is it?). But people are not open to change. Why trouble your life to do change your life when you are surviving the daily grind, anyway?

But it is not bad, it is not crazy. Changing (for the better) and challenging myself is actually good. I like it. It adds spice to my life. For my personal growth.

Iloilo – Breakthrough vs. Tatoy’s

Though far from the city proper, we went to these two famous Iloilo restaurants to enjoy the food!

Lunch courtesy of Tatine and company (thanks so much!) at Breakthrough, with wine to add an elegant touch to the loads of food. It was also Ninang’s early birthday celebration.

For dinner, we went to Tatoy’s, still around “Norte” (according to
Journey who I met along the beach earlier at lunch). Food in Tatoy’s was much more delicious and more reasonably priced, but view in Breakthrough was better.

Beautiful. Friendly crew. Warm service. Lots of flowers. A place where you can enjoy the beach, feel the breeze, play volleyball and basketball, sleep in a hammock and do loads more of stuff! I simply loved that place.

It was here in Baras Beach Resort that I got to enjoy playing billiards. Nice!

Sunday was the day for island hopping. We went to the Sea Turtle Feeding and Caring Station, passed by the Fairy Castle Island, did some snorkeling, ate lunch at Baras Beach Resort, quickly enjoyed the splendor of Isla Natago (apparently, a German-owned property whose caretaker was very unfriendly – hey, foreigners cannot own land in this country!). Then, we passed by Isla Naburo and a mini cave with beautiful colors – purple, green and others, like a sapin-sapin). Whew.

Fortunately, I wore my Tribu sandals. The trek (an uphill trek) to the Ave Maria Shrine Cross with sharp coral-like rocks shaping the way took about 30 minutes. It felt much longer, but based on the photo information, that was it. Another 30 minutes at the top, and another 30 minutes going down (all time are estimates and approximates only).

Despite the “struggle” to go up (we were definitely unprepared, all thinking that it would be very easy), the view and feel at the top was breathtaking that I was among the last from the group to go down the Cross. So refreshing, with a view of Iloilo City!

But, uhm, I saw this last photo at the top where the cross stands!

Trappist Monastery

One of the must go places in Guimaras, the Trappist Monastery houses the only Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance in the country. While there, a monk received us and told us about their lives. Apparently, they wake up at 2:15 in the morning to pray for all of us. He even asked for our prayers and blessed us. Of course, I prayed for my health and peace in Mindanao.

For the Guimaras trip, I with my officemates stayed in Villa Igang in Poblacion, Nueva Valencia. Nice place, poor network signal, definitely far from the urban stress (except when reached by the boss over the phone), great for a short morning walk.

I should have a fresh start again, not just because it's now October and in my work it's a new year, but because I think it's good to have that mindset -- having a fresh start everyday.

Recently my life has been boring and I'm bored, which shouldn't be the case. It's my life, anyway. I have that power to decide if my life is exciting or not, despite what God gives me everyday. It's a matter of choosing how to see life.

A Different Weekend

Around 11:00 in the evening

I was already enjoying a good night sleep when I suddenly woke up. I didn't know why, but I just woke up. Tita Star also got startled in her sleep, then said, "May nagbanggaan."

We went to the window to see what happened outside, but didn't see any. We went to the "veranda" (balkon, in Filipino) to look closely and see if there's anything we could do.

Then boom. It was a shock to see a truck in front of our house wrecking our fence. More shock to see a woman and a man lying by the side of the balkon, with the woman crying out for help.

The driver and the pahinante were not harmed. The two passengers who flew out of the truck shouldn't have been riding that huge vehicle in the first place. Thank God they were not critically harmed. I hope they're now doing fine with no complications whatsoever.

Please, DO NOT DRINK WHEN DRUNK.

I went to Montalban (now Rodriguez) in Rizal to join the a Flickr group - litratistakami - photoshoot. My first time to join a photowalk, my first time to meet any of them, my first time to go to Wawa Dam.

Slept overnight at Shei's house, then went to Wawa Dam next morning with her mother (who left when the group arrived), his brother EJ (who looked for insects), and Sarah (who really enjoys the outdors).

Not much time to write about that trip since I've been quite busy lately. Oh yeah, busy with out of town training, free lunch, birthday celebrations, staying up late, and work.

Regarding that photowalk, though, I got so very few good shots. That one above is my second favorite photo that does not need post processing (I'm not fond of editing photos, even if it's fun, since it consumes much of my time). Among my next posts will be my favorite photo. ;)

I was playing with the macro mode of Canon Digital Ixus i zoom that I borrowed from home. Really difficult (for me at least) to focus clearly, especially compared with the ease of doing macro with Sony Cyber-shot W-55.

When I finally got a clear shot of the keyboard, whew, that was somehow fulfulling. AT LEAST a clear shot. Not astounding, but not out of focus.

Then I viewed it on my computer. Yuck, eew, kadiri. Ang dumi pala!

Now I should believe that keyboards are dirtier than toilet bowls. Haha.

Reflection; Preparing to Soar

Yesterday, I told my boss that I wanted to try teaching. More than being supportive, he encouraged me to try and explore further. I said I wanted a not so developed institution to serve. He shared his adventure and crazy stories. Now I have this idea of trying out teaching in a province not my own -- beautiful province aside from Zambales.

Being a supportive boss, a mentor who would push me to be more daring, more adventurous, confident and have that "lakas ng loob," he even advised me to apply for teaching positions NOW. Yeah, he's my boss and I've been with the project for only two months now and yet he's telling me to go -- that hey, it isn't bad to jump from one job to another especially if it entails testing myself, discovering myself, learning, growing and pushing my limit. I like that! Being unconventional.

Yesterday was the first time that I wasn't left confused and dazed when faced with questions about life -- contemplating and reflecting what I want to do. It was even exhilarating. I'm taking it quite slowly, though. The second semester would start in about two months already, yet I'm still here not really doing something about applying for a teaching position outside my comfort zone. Hey, it is not that easy. Fun, yes, but not really easy.

So, am I now ready to soar high? Still preparing for it. Like that photo above, I have not spread my wings yet, but am excited to see what's in store for me -- what I would learn about myself, what to see in the horizon. Sometimes, life offers more than what we initially see and perceive. I think it is going to be beautiful .

Flowers in Baras Beach Resort

Still fascinated with macro shots, here are a few more flowers from Baras Beach Resort, taken on August 31 during our island hopping escapade.

Again, I don't know this flower or plant.

Baras is simply beautiful. Lots of flowers, green grass, refreshing air, friendly staff, recreations (boating, billiards, basketball, volleyball, hammocks, etc.)

The rooms also offer great views (at least the ones that I saw.) Rooms, I guess, are not air-conditioned. It's a beach, anyway.

I used not to enjoy "macro shots." I was not good at it. Then in Trappist Monastery on my trip to Guimaras (August 30), I saw Abi taking a photo of the yellow bells. Macro shot. I tried it with the borrowed digicam I was using.

Fun! That's what I can say. And beautiful.

The photo above was one of the really good shots I got. The yellow bell did not turn out to be astounding. Here's another one that passed my "standards."

I just don't know what these flowers are called. :)

Ronald, the younger kid and only eight years old, is the more outgoing of the two. I told him I'll upload their picture in the Internet. He said that they have a computer but without an Internet connection. But when he grows up, he can have access to this virtual world and he'll search for his picture.

A historical event. The Eraserheads concert!

I was not there, though. I was enjoying my time in Guimaras. About to take a good night sleep, lying on the resort bed, my phone rang. My boyfriend was calling.

Somebody was singing. I couldn't figure what it was all about. I thought he mistakenly dialed my number while having a good time in the city. Then, my heart pounded. It became clear. It was Eraserheads! He was in the Eheads concert! And he let me hear a bit of that concert!

"... Lift your head, baby don't be scared..."

I like that song. It was so beautiful hearing that song. I appreciate it. I love it!

For that, extra pasalubong points for him. Hehe. Love you! :)

(It was just unfortunate that Ely Buendia had to be rushed to the hospital and that the concert was cut short. Hope he gets well. Peace! Also, peace in Mindanao.)

August 15-18, Mon and some of his officemates went to Bicol. Bicol!!! I want to go to Bicol! It's in my "places to go".

However, I did not go with them. I could not go with them because (1) he was going with his officemates, and (2) I did not have a long weekend. (For that, I settled going to Guimaras -- next week.)

I reminded him of his pasalubong for me (I guess he really did not plan to buy some treats for me, huh!) So, on Tuesday last week, he gave me a basket of goodies from Bicol.

Pinya, very delicious, which cost only P10.00 each. Pili tarts. A pair of slippers made of abaca. Tinapa. All in a cute basket that can be bought at three for P100.00. Yummy! :)

P.S. Photo is in black and white because (1) it shows some mood of not being able to go to some place I really wanted to go, and (2) I could not take a decent photo of those treats.

I WILL GO TO BICOL someday! And, I'll take good, beautiful photos of the things and places that I want!

Reaching for the Guiding Light

Three topics in here. One, about photos; two, about my life and realizations; and three, about Guimaras. I miss blogging, hence I'm here again!

Photographs and Blogging

Just about a month or two ago, I declared to make this a sort of photo blog to document my life. At least once a week, an entry with a photograph and maybe some text too to say about my life. Except for announcements and bulletins, a picture must be present.

However, I don't have any recent photograph to post here for now. Yes, I have some photos in my phone, but don't have the means to upload here (I'm using the office computer and internet). I need a memory stick (the computer has a card reader), but haven't bought one yet. Yes, there is a USB cable supplied with my camera phone, but I don't want to install my phone application here.

Anyway, I searched my Flickr account and settled for that picture. I feel it fits my second topic for this entry. By the way, my account's weird as of this writing. Old sets from my old free pro account appeared, but since I'm enjoying a free Flickr account and I already got a thousand (maybe I'm exaggerating) photos uploaded but only 200 will appear, those sets are empty. It's just weird.

Okay, I miss writing here. I'm typing too much again.

Reaching for the Guiding Light

After weeks (or even months?!) of contemplating about my life, I have finally reached a point where I am comfortable with myself. Those weeks of contemplation (and meditation??) were really confusing. Now, I'm confident to say that I am (somehow) at peace with my self.

"Defining" what I want to do with my life has been frustrating and extremely difficult. What I found out, though, was that when I put "money" in the equation, and some "typical expectations from the society", everything became a mess. It's just not me to be money-motivated, and it so unfair to me to live up to "what I think" other people expects from me.

Hence, I now write what I want. Although I can't tell what my passion is. Probably living my life to the fullest is my true passion.

I'm still an idealist. However, I do not know where to channel that energy of idealism (which sometimes wanes by the way, especially when I'm distracted by other superficial things). So I reassessed my interests. I want to teach. I realized I wanted to teach back in second or third year college (about five years ago). But one crazy teacher doubted my sincerity. I doubted that desire in the process.

I want to teach, but I want to teach to people who aren't so blessed to have a good education, but honestly, not the very marginalized people. I even want to teach high school students. I want to inspire them and be a guiding light to them. How idealist.

Besides, I hate research. Not teaching in big universities would complement that.

I also want to travel and explore the beauty of my country. Now, this is expensive. Okay, there are budget trips, but too many budget trips is still costly. How do I deal with that? I'm starting to take charge of my personal finances. Not starve myself, but spend and save strategically.

I also want to help save our environment. For that, I have resolved that I need not join environmental NGO's. I just have to live that life with a conscious effort to do my part in preserving our dear Mother Earth. Still, volunteering is great.

So for now, I'm living each day at a time. I'm trying to celebrate each moment. I'm really not a long-term planner, so it works for me. At least I have some vision of what I want in my life. I'll just do my best every day.

I'll do my best here in my current work. I'll build relationships. I'll optimize my time (how so econ). I'll smile.

I celebrate. I laugh. I live my life. :)

Guimaras Trip Next Week!

Not yet so excited, but looking forward to it. I'm going to Guimaras next week with some of my officemates. Yey!

A great time to take photos of the wonders of my country, snapshots of my life, pictures of the people I am with. A great time, too, to make friends. :)

I just hope for peace in our country.

Invitation to photojournalists and photo enthusiasts!

The Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines, together with the
Philippine Center for Photojournalism, Inc., invites all photojournalists and
photo enthusiasts to submit entries for a photo contest on the theme of "Climate
Change". Ambassador Alistair MacDonald, Head of Delegation of the European
Commission to the Philippines said that the photo contest is being launched in
line with the European Union's commitment to address the global challenge of
climate change.

The European Union has long been in the lead in
international efforts to cope with climate change and global warming. The EU has
already committed itself to reducing its overall emissions to at least 20% below
1990 levels by 2020, and is ready to scale up this reduction to as much as 30%
under a new global climate change agreement.

Ambassador MacDonald said
that this photo-contest in the Philippines will help draw public attention to
the challenge of climate change, and to the need for global and local action to
address this issue, and to protect the futures of generations to come.

An exhibition of the winning and outstanding photographs is foreseen to
be held in universities and malls such as The Podium and SM. An online version
of the exhibition will also be uploaded to the websites of the sponsoring
organizations.

The following rules will apply to the contest:

1. Who may join: The competition is open to all Filipino (a citizenship verification system should be made or should be in the entry form) photojournalists and photography enthusiasts except for staff of the Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines.

2. Coverage/theme:Photographs, published or unpublished, taken in the Philippines from June 2007 to November 2008 covering the theme "Climate Change in the Philippines" are eligible as entries. The pictures shall illustrate either the effects, and/or the causes and/or the responses to this phenomenon:
2.1. The effects of climate change: Pictures of weather-related
disasters, droughts, degraded soiled effects of communities in disaster-prompt areas (e.g. coastal communities), etc.
2.2. The causes of climate change: Pictures
of deforestation, landscape change, heavy urbanization, transport pollution, fossil foils emissions sources (e.g. coal & petrol plants, etc). 2.3. The response to climate change: Pictures illustrating renewable
energy initiatives, energy efficiency, climate change adaptation measures (disaster preparedness, soil protection, etc)".
3. A maximum of ten (10) stand alone single photos may be submitted by a
participant. In addition, participants may submit up a maximum of five (5) photo stories comprising 5-12 images per photo story. All images in the photo stories will also be considered as single photo entries.

4. Entries should be taken with any camera using at least 135 mm film and/or
digital camera with at least four (4) megapixel in size and set at the largest
image capture mode.

5. Entries taken with a film camera must be digitized and all entries must be
saved in a compact disk recordable (CDR) for submission. Filename system should
be as follows:
5.1. For single images:
(Initials of photographer)_(Photo #-Total No. of Entries)
Example:
JAD_Photo1-8; JAD_Photo2-8; etc.
5.2. For photo stories:

creativity – 25%. In addition, the photo stories will be evaluated on their strength in terms of the flow and cohesiveness of the included single images
arranged as a visual narrative.

12. All entries must be submitted on or before 12 noon on 6 November, or postmarked not later than 3 November 2008, to either of the following:

I love the beach!

The photo was taken during a celebration at the beach a day before my birthday, an afternoon (and night) full of relaxing fun moments and love (yeah).

I was with only three close friends, with my family dropping by for a moment.

Simple. Despite the many people enjoying the waves and sand, plus the noise of the performing bands, it felt peaceful.

Oh how I want a simple life! But my life isn't really that simple. I've got to love it, no matter what!

Marahil, ang larawang ito ay walang saysay para sa karamihan -- larawang isang tuldok ng liwanag lang ang makikita.

Subalit sa larawang ito, nakakakuha ako ng munting katahimikan.

Isang kuha sa Anawangin, lugar na malayo sa kaguluhan ng mundo. Sa gitna ng kadiliman, ang lamparang ito kasama ng mga bituin sa langit ang siya lamang nagbibigay ng liwanag.

Marahil nakakatakot -- malayo sa komportableng buhay, malayo sa nakagisnan.

Subalit, ito ay nakabibigay payapa. Tahimik. Masaya. Sa kadiliman, nagiging maliwanag ang kaisipan.

Heto na naman ako sa oras ng madamdaming pag-iisip. Kahit ang tila boring na larawan na ito ay nagiging makahulugan.

Another Quick Trip to the South

An even quicker trip to the south -- Mactan, Cebu. I had to go to Mactan Economic Zone. Nothing really interesting, and the time was very short for me to find something interesting. Hence, no photo inside the ecozone.

Inside the Manila International Domestic Airport, while waiting for my turn to check in, I noticed that something that separates the lines (what do you call that?) with a logo of the "Malayan Insurance... A YCG Member."

Check their website and you'll see that it is not a YCG company, but rather a YGC member of the Yuchengco-owned group of insurance companies.

The Long Wait at the Airport

The Clark Experience July 2008

July 7-9, 2008
I went to Clark for some work-related stuff. It was work. I was able to visit and stay at Hotel Stotsenberg then visit some duty free shops, which wasn't really exciting, by the way.

The Children
What really made my trip to Clark more significant is the experience of meeting the children selling the bamboo flutes. (I have to make it clear that despite that, I'm not in favor of child labor.)

Life is hard, but these children were still cheerful and very free-spirited. I bought one bamboo flute for only P20.00 (which unfortunately I couldn't play well.) Enthralled by their positive attitude, I asked to take their photo. They were shy at first, but agreed anyway. Very innocent and light-hearted, right? :)

Inside a Duty Free Shop
The rather boring "window shopping" inside duty free shops got interesting when I stumbled upon "SPPIT" inside Puregold. I couldn't resist not taking a shot.

The place was beautiful.

I learned while browsing through Flickr that it was formerly a military barracks. Maybe that explains why I felt so uncomfortable and scared inside the room... Or maybe because the room was just (literally) "dark".

The food was (generally) bad, except for the potato salad, which I really superbly enjoyed. :)

Clark
Hopefully on my third trip to Clark, I would be able to enjoy its beauty more. What's to see in Clark? That's something to find out.
