Invitation to photojournalists and photo enthusiasts!

The Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines, together with the
Philippine Center for Photojournalism, Inc., invites all photojournalists and
photo enthusiasts to submit entries for a photo contest on the theme of "Climate
Change". Ambassador Alistair MacDonald, Head of Delegation of the European
Commission to the Philippines said that the photo contest is being launched in
line with the European Union's commitment to address the global challenge of
climate change.

The European Union has long been in the lead in
international efforts to cope with climate change and global warming. The EU has
already committed itself to reducing its overall emissions to at least 20% below
1990 levels by 2020, and is ready to scale up this reduction to as much as 30%
under a new global climate change agreement.

Ambassador MacDonald said
that this photo-contest in the Philippines will help draw public attention to
the challenge of climate change, and to the need for global and local action to
address this issue, and to protect the futures of generations to come.

An exhibition of the winning and outstanding photographs is foreseen to
be held in universities and malls such as The Podium and SM. An online version
of the exhibition will also be uploaded to the websites of the sponsoring
organizations.

The following rules will apply to the contest:


1. Who may join: The competition is open to all Filipino (a citizenship verification system should be made or should be in the entry form) photojournalists and photography enthusiasts except for staff of the Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines.

2. Coverage/theme:Photographs, published or unpublished, taken in the Philippines from June 2007 to November 2008 covering the theme "Climate Change in the Philippines" are eligible as entries. The pictures shall illustrate either the effects, and/or the causes and/or the responses to this phenomenon:

2.1. The effects of climate change: Pictures of weather-related
disasters, droughts, degraded soiled effects of communities in disaster-prompt areas (e.g. coastal communities), etc.
2.2. The causes of climate change: Pictures
of deforestation, landscape change, heavy urbanization, transport pollution, fossil foils emissions sources (e.g. coal & petrol plants, etc). 2.3. The response to climate change: Pictures illustrating renewable
energy initiatives, energy efficiency, climate change adaptation measures (disaster preparedness, soil protection, etc)".

3. A maximum of ten (10) stand alone single photos may be submitted by a
participant. In addition, participants may submit up a maximum of five (5) photo stories comprising 5-12 images per photo story. All images in the photo stories will also be considered as single photo entries.

4. Entries should be taken with any camera using at least 135 mm film and/or
digital camera with at least four (4) megapixel in size and set at the largest
image capture mode.

5. Entries taken with a film camera must be digitized and all entries must be
saved in a compact disk recordable (CDR) for submission. Filename system should
be as follows:

5.1. For single images:
(Initials of photographer)_(Photo #-Total No. of Entries)
Example:
JAD_Photo1-8; JAD_Photo2-8; etc.
5.2. For photo stories:

6. Participants who will be included in the final selection process may be asked to submit their negatives and/or raw digital files.

7. Digitally-altered images will be disqualified. Traditional photo-enhancing must be limited to acceptable dodging, color level and contrast adjustments.

8. Contestants must enclose a paper containing the following details of his/her entries entered in the contest.

9. A duly signed certificate attesting that the photograph(s) is/are taken by the participant and that he holds the copyright to it must also be attached to the submitted entries. Only the photo title must appear outside the envelope.

10. The Board of Judges will be composed of respected photojournalists/ artists
as well as officials from the Delegation of the European Commission to the
Philippines, Philippine Center for Photojournalism, Inc. and partners.

11. General criteria for judging the single photos will be: Relevance to the topic and theme – 50%; Technical excellence – 25%; and, Visual perception and
creativity – 25%. In addition, the photo stories will be evaluated on their strength in terms of the flow and cohesiveness of the included single images
arranged as a visual narrative.

12. All entries must be submitted on or before 12 noon on 6 November, or postmarked not later than 3 November 2008, to either of the following:

13. Copyright ownership of the photographs entered into the competition remains
with the photographer. By entering this competition, the photographer agrees to share certain rights regarding their photograph entries with the Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines for fair use in the latter's publications and including usage for events/activities, for non-commercial purposes and without additional remuneration to the photographer for a period of two years starting on the deadline of submission of entries. The photographer will be adviced accordingly prior to the usage of the photograph/s.

14. Awarding of prizes will coincide with the opening of the exhibit of winning and outstanding entries in the early part of November 2008, at a date and place to be announced.

15. The following winners will be chosen. All winners will each receive a trophy plus in-kind prizes as follows:

It's raining hard, I feel sleepy. What more appropriate thing can I post today than this dull photo I took about two weeks ago?



That was the cab that denied to take us to the office. Bad taxi driver. When it's raining, like today's super heavy rain, it really is difficult to get a cab.

Earlier, I was lucky to get a cab while just walking to P. Burgos (where I usually wait for one). The driver, however, wanted to add some precious P30.00 in my fare. I brought down the "add-on" cost to P20.00, which I think was a reasonable amount (the P10.00 addition to taxi fares, plus another P10.00 for being thankful for the ease of getting a cab in a rainy Wednesday morning).

Today's taxi ride was strange and interesting since, ta-da, the driver was a Caucasian. Distracted from being hungry (I get so distracted very easily!), I wasn't able to strike up a conversation.

As I left the cab, he asked if I was a teacher (strange again, do I look like a teacher?). I said no, then asked him where did he come from. He said he's a Filipino with a Spanish blood. Yeah, and speaking a foreign language.

I wish I was able to take a photo of him and post it here. The Filipino taxi driver with a Spanish blood (and a foreign twang), driving a Nevada cab.

By the way, I find it difficult and inefficient if I try to post every single day. So I revise my earlier position - I'd blog at least once a week, plus bulletin/announcement posts. Have fun, thortz! :)

Centennial Smart MMS Photo Competition is now on!

Taga-UP ka ba? You have 100 days to showcase and share your stories
by joining the UP Centennial SMART MMS Photo Competition!

I've learned about this competition, brought by a partnership between Smart and UP College of Mass Communication, from an e-mail to a Yahoo! Group from Ivan Henares (who never fails to send to the group promotions and contests like these. But I do not know him).

Anyway, here's the contest rules:

1. About the Service

1.1 Overview.

As part of Smart’s support for the UP Centennial celebrations, Smart is partnering with the UP Diliman College of Mass Communications to launch the UPiktyuran Na! with Smart: UP Centennial Smart MMS Photo Competition and Polling (UPiktyuran Na!).

The MMS Photo Competition aims to urge UP students, alumni, faculty and employees to
share their own stories about their experiences in the university not through words but via photos taken using a camera phone, submitted through Smart’s MMS service and viewed over the Internet. Those who are not eligible to join the competition may take part through the Polling component, wherein they can vote for their favorite MMS photo entry as viewed in the web.

Smart would like to take part in honoring and marking UP’s Centennial celebration by launching a competition that vividly portrays the significance of the occasion and the meaning of being a part of the country’s premier university.

1.2 Duration.

UPiktyuran Na! shall be announced on June 21 and shall run for 100 days starting June 22, 2008 to September 29, 2008 for the MMS photo submission. Meanwhile, for the polling, subscribers have until October 3, 2008 to vote for their favorite MMS photo entries.

1.3 Theme.

MMS photo entries should communicate the participant’s story about UP experiences to
illustrate what being part of UP and its Centennial celebration means to him/her. It must contain elements symbolic of UP – photos can show people, places, things, or moments, or combinations of these that best illustrates the theme. Some examples - - shots taken from within a UP campus or facility; shots that incorporate a well known UP landmark; image of a family all wearing UP t-shirts (showing how many generations have studied and graduated from the university); image of a person posing like the Oblation (because UP means freedom).

2. UPiktyuran Na! with Smart: UP Centennial Smart MMS Photo Competition Mechanics

2.1 The competition is open to all Smart and Talk N Text subscribers who are affiliated with the University of the Philippines as: (1) student, (2) alumni, (3) faculty member, and (4) employee.

2.2 Participating Smart subscribers must register by sending in UP REG (Name/UP Campus participant is from/Position or title in UP) to 5355. Example: UP REG Bona Sy/UP Diliman/Alumni. Registration is free of charge. Participants can start sending entries on June 22, 2008 until 11:59 pm of September 29, 2008.

2.3 The subscriber or participant will receive an SMS confirmation
message if registration attempt is successful. Each MMS photo entry sent will
cost P1.00.

Welcome to the UPiktyuran Na! MMS Photo Competition! To send your photo entries, create an MMS message, type UP (title of photo), attach your photo and send to 5355. P1.00/MMS photo entry. All photo entries must be taken with your camera phone.

2.4 MMS photo entries must be taken with a camera phone. The subscriber/participant is not allowed to send his/her photo entry other than through their mobile phone in MMS. Photos must be taken within the competition period only and should be connected to the theme mentioned above.

2.5 Apart from the registration, the subscriber’s cellular phone number will serve as his/her identification (ID). A participant can opt to register several mobile numbers under the same name and can send as many entries/MMS photos per phone number.

2.6 There can only be one (1) registered name per cellular phone number. Should a subscriber attempt to register twice, he/she will receive an error message and will be charged P1.00 from his/her load.

2.7 To send a photo entry, subscribers must simply create an MMS message, type UP (title of photo), attach their photo entry (taken with their camera phone), and send this to 5355. Example: UP MMS Sunken Garden

2.8 The subscriber/participant will receive the following reply message via SMS if attempt to send photo entry is successful:
U have successfully sent ur MMS photo entry. Thanks for joining the UPiktyuran Na! MMS Photo Competition. U may win the Texter’s Choice Award! Tell your friends to vote for ur entry. Visit www.smart.com.ph/UPiktyuran 2 get the assigned image number of ur photo
& txt UPVOTE (image number) to 5355. U will b contacted by Smart representatives should ur photo win the contest.

2.9 Photographs that include sculptures, statues, paintings and other works of arts can be submitted as long as they do not constitute copyright infringement and not captured as full-frame close-up. When including in the MMS photograph artworks of others, it
must be as an object in its environment.

2.10 The winners will be chosen by a panel of judges that will be appointed by Smart. Photos will be judged on the basis of the following criteria:

Creativity – 30%
Adherence to theme – 20%
Composition – 20%
Originality – 30%

The decisions of the judges will be considered as final and binding. All winners will also be
expected to provide Smart with proof of identity or any information that Smart shall request for.

2.11 Weekly winners will be chosen as “UPiktyuran Pick of the Week” and will be featured in the contest microsite or in a publicity material.

2.12 Final winners will be chosen after the contest duration and awarded the following prizes:

Top ten (10) MMS photo entries will be awarded one Smart Bro Prepaid Plug-it each.
Final winners will be chosen from all entries and being chosen as a weekly winner will not be a guarantee of inclusion in the final winners.
Final winners shall be announced on October 10, 2008.

2.13 Entries and final winning entries may also be included in an actual exhibition that will be mounted by Smart in cooperation with UP.

WHERE: In the periphery of Tagaytay Ridge area. Actual location will be announced one week before the event to ensure fair play and that all competitors face the same conditions of unfamiliarity with every part of the course.

PROFILE: 10 kilometers with 400 meters of total elevation gain,Cross-country Orienteering competition is basically about physical endurance. It will take place in a rural area, mostly forested environment and aims at testing the athlete's ability to make efficient route choices, to read and interpret the map and plan the race for endurance during a long and physically demanding activity. The format emphasises route choices and navigation in rough and demanding terrain. A special element of the Cross-country is the presence of long legs, considerably longer than average leg length. These longer legs may be from 1.5km to 3.5km depending on the terrain type.

ENTRY FEE: Php250.00 per participant. Includes event t-shirt, post race meal and race kits. ( Php350.00 for on-site participants)

The two-day conference gathers the country's community leaders from every unit - barangay, city, municipality, and the provincial level to share skills of best ecological solid waste management practices.
